What is Public Service?

(This is a speech that I wrote.. It's a draft.. )

What is Public Service? According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, Public Service is defined as “the business of supplying a commodity (as electricity or gas) or service (as transportation) to any or all members of a community. If Public Service is supplying the needs of the members of a community, it should also be understood to be done whole-heartedly and honestly to the best of the ability of the public servant. Why do I tell you this? To tell you that, you, people of this nation, is the top-most priority of these so-called “public servants” in their desire to help us and to make our lives better. We, the community who should be supplied well enough and be taken cared off, should not suffer and sacrifice but we should live our lives in comfort. Yet why do we still suffer? We can still see people on the streets, eating their meagre food while the so-called “public servants” sit comfortably on their chairs, free of any dust, enjoying a ride in their cars and living in their luxurious houses. These are the people we let and allowed  to help us, the people we hoped to alleviate our lives as what they promised during campaigns, their words hang in the four corners of every stage they place themselves, the people who promised to serve us. If I may ask, what paid their luxurious life? You all know the answer, the money of the people. Money they worked hard for, money they risk their lives for, money they shed blood, sweat and tears for, expecting to have a better living afterwards.

Let me tell you a story of a country, how it was supposed to be a good land until some big sharks overtook it and claimed everything because they are big, untouchable and powerful. This country was once full of lush greens and good people but when the evil of power and money found its way to them, everyone wanted money, became so greedy and they took things which are not theirs. Isn’t it familiar? Of course, that was what happened to your country, my beloved country. Who’s to blame for all of this? We don’t know.

My friends, it’s not a secret to you how our country is doing but what are the people we voted for are doing? Or for a more elaborate question, where is the help they are supposed to give? Kept inside the barrels?! As you all may know, this non-sense, dragging, drama of the issue of Pork Barrel Scam took us all like a storm and it has affected us more than we thought it could affect us. Yes! We are affected because it’s our right to be affected! We pay taxes in the hope of improving our lives for the future and future generations but all our hard work are put to waste because only a few people are benefited.

How many unfinished bridges and roads are set aside because they said funds are not anymore sufficient to finish the project? What happened to the funds for the books of the school children so they can learn and somehow help this country in the future? What about the medical assistance for the less fortunate who could not afford the high priced medicines because the government could not supply cheap but effective medicines? Haven’t they promised these things to us?

It’s time for us to end this cycle; we have a voice and together let us stand to end corruption.  The pork barrel system that was supposed to help people improve their lives has now become the source of all poverty and suffering of the less fortunate. The evil of too much money given to these people crept inside their heads and had caused too much chaos in this country. Who are these people to look us in the eyes, promised to help us but without us knowing, are slowly stealing from us. Pork Barrel should be abolished, because that system should die to end the damage that it had caused to our country. No to Pork Barrel!
